Spatial data - GIS
The CBDG Internet service provides an application, the geographic viewer (GIS), to search for and retrieve spatial data.

The viewer makes it possible to:
- display maps showing locations of points and areas (e.g. boreholes and deposits)
- zoom in, zoom out and pan the map image
- form a query based on the qualities of selected objects: documents, boreholes and deposits
- select objects (e.g. boreholes) or their groups
- display information on selected objects
- generate reports with data on selected objects
- select sheets of SMGP, MHP and MGGP/MGP maps to be ordered.
Out of all the CBDG data, the viewer currently provides the following information layers:
Boreholes
The CBDG contains data on all the boreholes that are registered in the Central Geological Archives in the form of individual borehole cards or archival documentation. Results of geophysical borehole surveys available in the CBDG are presented on a separate information layer.
The users must pay attention to the content of ‘Location Base’ and ‘Verified Location’ fields (yes/no). For part of the boreholes without coordinates a ‘symbolic’ location is used: the centre of the town in which a particular borehole was drilled. The number of the boreholes with locations verified in the CBDG is gradually increasing.
The users can perform a detailed search for boreholes by means of the available form.
The gravimetric and magnetometric survey sites
The layers present measurement points of gravimetric surveys and the vertical component of the Earth’s magnetic field. The data were prepared by the CBDG team on the basis of the data provided by the Polish Geophysical Company (PBG).
2D and 3D seismics
The layers present locations of 2D and 3D seismic images digitally rendered in Poland.
Geoelectrical sounding – SGE
The layer provides information on geophysical surveys such as geoelectrical resistivity sounding (SGE).
Marine geophysical profiles
Marine geophysical profiles were obtained from the GEOECHO database of the PIG Marine Geology Branch in Gdańsk.
Mineral deposits (from the MIDAS system)
The map presents mineral deposit contours, mining area contours and mining country contours obtained from the MIDAS system.
Archival geological reports
To search for archival reports, the users should select map sheets or use the query form.
If a given archival report is not available in the CBDG, the reasons can be as follows:
- the report was prepared before 1990 and has not been digitised yet
- the report is new and has not yet been catalogued or sent to the CBDG
- the report is stored neither in the Central Geological Archives nor in the catalogued archives in the ARCHIGEO database.
The users can perform a detailed search for reports by means of the available form.
Archival geoelectrical reports
The map provides the data obtained from the ARGEOL database, run by the SEGI-PGB company. The source database, ARGEOL, presented locations of geoelectrical reports on the areas less than 1km2 as points. The map shows the areas in question as squares of 1km2.
The users can perform a detailed search for reports by means of the available form.
Geological and engineering maps
The layer presents the scope of geoengineering atlases of urban agglomerations.
Serial maps: SMGP, MHP and MGGP/MGP
The CBDG Internet service contains graphic indexes of the following serial maps: SMGP, MHP and MGGP/MGP. The indexes provide basic information on particular map sheets and their completion state. They enable the users to select map sheets to be purchased from the PGI and to print the ready order.
The users can perform a detailed search for maps by means of the available forms.
Hydrocarbon concession blocks
The layer was prepared by the CBDG team on the basis of the information obtained from the Ministry of the Environment.
Physiogeographic regions
The layer was prepared by the CBDG team on the basis of ‘Regional Geography of Poland’, a 2002 report by Jerzy Kondracki. The indexes of physiogeographic units conform to the 1971 revised version of the Universal Decimal Classification of the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID).
Natura 2000
The two following layers provide information on the European ecological network:
- SPA – Special Protection Areas for Birds,
- SAC – Special Areas for Conservation.
It is possible to make comparative analysis of locations of these protected areas on the map and the geological content of the service.
The information provided by the CBDG Internet service is presented against the background of the GIS layers that show locations of roads, rivers, lakes, cities and towns, borders of administrative units and the scope of activity areas of the PGI regional branches. The data used in the surface water layer were obtained from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management and the data used in the administrative border layer from the State Border Register. The model of the territory of Poland is based on the data obtained from the Polish Army Topographical Service.
The functions of the geographic viewer are described in more detail in
